Spring Cleaning Your Erotic Potential

The optimal climate for our bodies to be in resting state is between 68 degrees and 77 degrees. For many of us, it has been a long winter. Our bodies go into hibernation. They are stressed by the elements and temperature drops. They pack on weight. Become sluggish.

This is not where the erotic lives and plays.

Then, Spring blooms. The temperature comes back to a place of resting state. Our bodies begin to stir as the environment around us comes alive again. We begin to break through the fog of hibernation and hope is renewed. As our bodies come on line again, the concept of spring cleaning is not new to us. We begin to take on projects, open the windows and air out our homes, clean the windows and remove the dust bunnies gathered in the corners all winter long.

It can be a time to spring clean the erotic as well.

During the winter months, many of our bodies go into that hibernation and lack the sun. We may create islands of erotic opportunities. Many of us take our bodies to the fresh air and ocean at some point during these months, just to make it through to another spring. In fact, for many of my clients with depression, I prescribe to them a 7-10 day suncation somewhere. February and March are optimal times for this, to give the bodies a little boost of Vitamin D and some color on our skins.

We may lose the erotic connection in our bodies during this time. We slack off on sex with ourselves and with our partners. We stop caring for our bodies in many ways with lack of movement, eating things for comfort, and losing interest in activities we love.

With the tilt of the earth and more sun, longer days, we can have an erotic awakening. Our mental health may begin to feel better, more manageable, and symptoms like loss of interest, depressed moods, lethargy, begin to lift. We may feel like joining life again and a recommitment to self-care. A desire to move our bodies returns. Erotic spring cleaning can be a part of all of that. Desire stirs. The desire to be desired wakes up. We want to be seen and to emerge.

The tools to support your erotic spring cleaning and dusting off the erotic to reignite the ember of desire can be the following:

  1. Get Your Body Moving Again. Whether you are counting your steps, training for a 5k, lifting weights, going to yoga, or pilates, it does not matter the how, just the activation of body movement. You begin to feel your body again, replace lethargy and sitting with movement and energy. If you take action on the things you have control over, like moving your body, then you will feel that sense of accomplisment and pride. This comes from taking action on that which we control. When we do not take action, we are depressed and feelings of guilt and shame begin to creep in. Not erotic at all. Moving our bodies IS an embodiment practice. Here is another resource for more embodiment practices.

  2. Spring Clean, Literally, Your Bedroom. Put away the clutter. Give a good top to bottom cleaning. Maybe order some fresh and sexy linens and bedding. Buy some candles, change the lighting. Our bedrooms can be an important launching place for our erotic. It is a place where you sleep well and sleep is vital to our mental health. Our bedrooms is a place where we invite a partner in for the erotic and have intimacy with our spouse or lover. If we spring clean our environment and make it feel sexy, it will BE sexy.

  3. Reconnect with Embodiment Practices. I share an arousal building meditation in my recent podcast that was part of my April Women’s Talking Circle for Back to the Body. It is vital to spend some time meditating around our bodies and our arousal. We are responsible for our turn on and in order to bring the erotic to our partnerships we need to ignite the fires within first.

  4. Dust off Your Self Touch Practice. When is the last time you really spent some self time. Time to explore, build your arousal and learn something new about it. Shop for a new toy, a new bath scent, a sexy pair of pajamas, and outfit. Create a new sexy playlist by going through a music app and exploring some new songs. The erotic lives in mystery and newness creates a level of surprise and mystery.

  5. Flirt with Life. Notice life. Go beyond walking down the street and take a longer look around you. Savor with your eyes, your nose, your ears and truly take in everything and everyone. Your awareness builds a fire. Flirt with the store clerk, the person who holds the door open, the person walking their dog-flirt with the dog! Dusting off our flirting brings a whole new awareness to where the erotic lives in our bodies. Get social and be social by getting out in the community with others and connecting.

Spring cleaning the erotic that may have gotten packed away for the winter months is a way to feel into the aliveness again. Here are some spring cleaning questions to ask yourself:

  • When was the last time I felt erotic?

  • What did that feel like?

  • What has gotten in my way this season? Climate? The News and world events? Partnership challenges? Medical issues? Issues with my body love? Life circumstances?

  • What supports might my erotic need? A conversation with my partner? Dating again? Body love and more care? A stress management plan? Take a break from news and life circumstances for a moment?

  • What can I commit to in my life to bring my erotic back on line?
